Do You Spend More Than You Should?

Posted by faithhkhblog | Financing | Tuesday 27 October 2009 7:33 am

Keeping finances under control can be hard.

The media shower us with advertising promotions for seemingly irresistible offers like cheap and simple to arrange credit, loans, and free gifts with applications.

This does sometimes look good but things can get out of hand if there is not sufficient for everyday living costs because of luxury purchases.

Things like mortgages and car loans are unavoidable in many cases but money lenders, finance companies and retail outlets encourage us to overspend.

Credit are often simple to get hold of but can be a problem to pay off and there is always the temptation to use one to pay the other, creating a spiral of debt.

Although the advertising might say that credit is free, it always has to be paid for. It is commonplace for families to be paying out a thousand pounds a year in debt repayments and this is bound to affect their lifestyle. Many of these people also live from one day to the next without savings.

American bankruptcies for private people have actually gone up be 100% in the past decade and most of the people were employed, but high bills or pay cuts caused their financial difficulty.

In Britain the total of personal debt is around one hundred and thirty billion pounds. There is approximately three thousand pounds in credit card debt, loans and bank overdrafts for each adult living in UK.

Credit card loans have risen by 100% over a period of five years.

Getting out of debt will stop interest payments. If payments on credit cards are increased to a higher percentage per month, the interest will be lower and the debt will be paid much sooner.

Sometimes interest can be saved by changing mortgage companies and fixing interest rates for two, or three years can ensure that you know exactly what you will pay each month, so that you know how much is available to clear other debts.

It can take longer to pay off bank loans and HP agreements because there are sometimes financial fines for paying early. If this is the case, just stick to the agreed amounts per month and don’t add more debt.

There are signals to watch out for that may indicate that you are getting into debt:

• If you find yourself paying for items that you would buy with cash with a credit card.

• Agreeing to further borrowing to deal with other debts.

• If you only pay the lowest required repayment on a credit card.

• Getting red letters in the mail.

• If you have to use money you have saved to pay a bill.

• Selling life insurance policies, cashing them in.

• Having to work extra hours to pay the bills.

• Going into your bank overdraft to pay a bill.

• Only paying debts because you are being pressed to pay them.

• Getting cash advances on credit cards just to live from day to day.

The CAB offers free advice on debt in UK and when you have sorted out ways of paying off debts, saving is important too. Setting up a standing order to pay monthly to a savings account is a good idea.

Generally speaking, don’t get into debt for things that are not vital to your life on a long term basis. A state of the art computer might not be vital, but a car could be. Ask yourself if it is just because you want it, or is it essential.

Look at the things you buy without thinking about them. Buying coffee each day in a coffee shop and purchasing pre-packed sandwiches for lunch can cost a lot of money over a month.

The golden rule is to keep a tally of your spending. Check it before you get a bank statement that frightens the life out of you when it lands on your door mat.

Things to Remember Before You Go On Vacation

Posted by faithhkhblog | Uncategorized | Saturday 24 October 2009 7:29 am

If you are planning to be away from home for a while for business purposes, a special end of week break, or for a family holiday, getting ready to go can take time and make you feel stressed out before you go. Adding more to the list of things to take care doesn’t help matters at all, but making sure things are done properly can make it easier when you get home and stop you worrying about it while you are away. There is nothing worse than being away from home and suddenly wondering if you remembered to take care of an urgent bill, or take care of the dog.

There are four important things to remember before setting off on vacation and a few ways to make them easier here:

You should make sure your home looks inhabited, even if you are thousands of miles away. A couple of timers which are quite inexpensive can be set to switch TV’s, lights and radios on and off. Make sure you stop your paper deliver as a heap of these by your door will make it obvious there is no one home. Ask the postal service to hang onto your mail while you are away. You can easily do this by printing off a form from the USPS site (www.usps.com), or go over to paperless billing and stop the problem of all that unwelcome mail.

If you arrange for payments for utilities to be taken automatically when due, you are not in danger of forgetting them while away from home. You can also do this by Visa card and pay the bills without hassle, while saving time too. There are various ways to set this up and you can find details at www.visa.com/billpay.

You also need to make arrangements for your animals and houseplants. Arrange for a pet-sitter or book your animals into a kennel so that you know they are properly taken care of. Arrange for someone to tidy your yard and water plants inside and out, unless you are only away for a short time when you can always put a timer on your sprinkler and put houseplants in the shade so that they get watered by the sprinkler. If you have someone you can trust to come and attend to these things, that’s even easier.

Ensure that you cut down on energy costs while you are away, by switching off water and gas and removing the plugs from things such as microwaves and televisions which have standby lights and waste electricity. This also stops damages done by electricity surges. Lower the thermostat on you heating or turn it off, if you are away for a longer period of time.

From simple things like fitting a timer to lights to arranging for your bills to be paid on time, using these hints can make going on vacation less stressful and make sure that you don’t come home to any nasty surprises.

The Benefits of Making a Living Will

Posted by faithhkhblog | funeral plans pre arranged | Thursday 22 October 2009 7:26 am

If the cost of your health care is increasing by ten percent per year and income is rising by just four percent, it does not take much mathematical skill to realise that things do not look good. It is becoming more and more common for someone who has been a hard worker and saved up some money for their retirement, to have to use it to finance medical treatment. The cost of this soars when you need specialised machines to keep you functioning during serious ill health. At these times having a living will can help protect a family from losing all that hard earned money.

What this is a completely legal will which lets someone else take the decision to stop expensive medical care if the person is totally reliant on machines to be able to function properly. Feeding tubes can be taken away and machines that assist breathing turned off if the elected executor decides that it is the right time to stop treatment.

There are rules and regulations and safeguards around this and these must be adhered to before treatment is stopped. However, there are no set rules right across US because they are different between states.

Generally speaking, a doctor must certify that the patient will not get any better and is either is a condition that is fast deteriorating, or is in severe pain. The patient must also be unable to live without the help of machines. A person who has made a living will can have the machines switched off, if their executor makes the request.

Sometimes a living will is challenged by someone from the family who is not mentioned in the will. Courts have usually upheld the request made in the living will and it is very rare for them to force this very expensive treatment to continue.

Making a living will allows the executor of the will to end the suffering. Situations like this occur only too often and keeping someone alive on machines causes more suffering and costs a huge amount of money in the process. Making a living will takes this kind of decision away from other family members and makes it yours. Once you have signed the document you have made that decision.

Important Items for a First Aid Kit

Posted by faithhkhblog | Uncategorized | Tuesday 20 October 2009 7:22 am

An emergency first aid kit is an essential thing for every home to have, especially if there are children around. Just knowing that you have the basic equipment to deal with first aid emergencies is one less thing to worry about within the household. The following list is the minimum requirement for a basic first aid kit:

1. All wounds and scratches need an antiseptic to keep away infection, so you will need something like Bactine, or a similar product. When it is not possible to wash a wound thoroughly, an antiseptic gets rid of any foreign bodies that may be in the wound and is also very soothing. Antiseptics are available as creams or sprays too, so choose whichever you prefer.

2. Adhesive bandages like Band-Aid, or similar, are useful if you get a pack which contains different sizes of dressing. Gauze pads in bigger sizes can easily be cut down and are excellent for treating more severe injuries.

3. Scissors are an essential item in any first aid kit. They are useful for cutting gauze pads or clothes if it is necessary. They are requires for cutting surgical tape.

4. Ace bandages, or similar, can be useful when treating sprains and breakages.

5. Hot and cold packs are made to be used once only. They instantly give heat, or cold to reduce swelling and pain, in cases of sprain, bruising, and various other knocks and bumps.

6. Surgical tape is very useful in a first aid kit as it can be used to stick gauze in place, and to make sure that other dressings stay where they should be.

7. Things like scissors and tweezers are very often forgotten but they are often very useful. Tweezers are excellent for pulling out stings, extracting in-growing hairs.

8. Latex gloves are essential to give protection. They make a barrier against bacterial infection, blood and other body fluids. These are vital to protect yourself during an emergency situation.

9. Analgesics are pain killers. These may include aspirin, or ibuprofen, and are used for the treatment of headache or pain resulting from injury.

10. Antibiotic cream is very useful and may be applied to scratches, wounds, and other injuries where the skin is broken, to fight off infection.

11. Disinfectant, or plain rubbing alcohol is useful for wiping clean bites or stings from insects, or cleansing injuries. It is possible to buy disinfectant wipes which are more convenient for keeping in a first aid kit and take up little space.

12. Allergies can be uncomfortable to deal with and keeping an antihistamine on hand can help to relieve symptoms.

13. Last but not least important, keep a list of useful phone numbers on a card in your first aid kit. The numbers of a doctor, the poisons centre for your country, or area, and any information about the medication members of the family take regularly may be useful too.

How To Choose A Wedding Gift

Posted by faithhkhblog | Uncategorized | Saturday 17 October 2009 7:15 am

A wedding is a special occasion for the two people concerned and for their family and friends. The gifts offered at the wedding are a token way of celebrating and expressing feelings for the couple concerned. Care needs to be taken when making a choice of gift and things like what the couple might prefer need to be considered. The cost of the gift is not important but it should always be chosen to suit the receiver.

Sometimes it can be really difficult to choose a gift that’s different, because of the wide range of possibilities out there. It can take some time to search the internet, and look around the stores to find the ideal gift without spending too much.

Something personalised is always a good choice and a carefully chosen crystal, or even matching wristwatches engraved with dates is a gift that is unique to the occasion and the bride and groom.

If the couple marrying are close to you, an album of family photographs is a great idea for a gift. Things like plates with painted portraits of their family, special quilts made with family photos on them, or purpose made wedding celebration plates with the couple on them are all unusual ideas which can be investigated on the internet.

Keen golf players might even like a personalised golf set with their names on each item, but make sure they both play golf first.

A nice leather Bible with the details of the wedding written in it is a thoughtful gift for a religious couple. Here again, make sure that you have done your homework and know that this would be appreciated.

The range of interesting and unusual gifts is huge if you find out what the couple like first. Gift certificates, things for the home, silver items, or things to remind them of their special day are all options, depending on what you think the couple would like.

The choice of gift from bride to groom and vice versa, is up to the couple concerned.
They can choose from a wide range of things from matching items of jewellery, to specially written poems, scrolls, or even more lavish gifts, according to what they wish to spend.

The bride and groom may give gifts to their parents and the choice of these is also very wide from a special, relaxing spa weekend, down to framed photographs, or poems. Once again it is the thought behind the gift that matters, not the amount of money spent.

Sometimes parents organise bridal showers so that the couple can get to know the family, or they may give the couple something personal. Gifts do not need to cost a lot of money but they should take the preferences of the individual receiving them into account.

Tips To Save Up Money and Energy During Summer

Posted by faithhkhblog | Financing | Wednesday 14 October 2009 9:27 pm

Reducing what you spend on fuel bills during summer is an excellent way of having a bit extra money for the family and it helps on a community level. Just a small change, or two can reduce the amount you spend on energy by up to half.

Cutting back on energy consumption need not be difficult, or cause hardship, and it need not cost you anything to do. Stopping the waste is the main thing to concentrate on. Where you do have to pay a professional to check out the efficiently of air conditioning, for example, you will generally recoup the cost in savings made from better efficiency and less wear and tear on the appliance.

1.) Keeping window covering pulled down, or across in the day time keeps out the heat of the sun.

2.) Proper, effective insulation will keep cool air inside.

3.) Using an outside grill to cook will stop the living space from heating up, but if you must cook inside make sure you have an effective vent with a hood on the cooker to send the heat outside.

4.) Microwave cooking makes less heat and uses around 50% of the electricity that you would use with an electric oven. It also takes 25% less time to cook.

5.) Do not use heat to dry dishes in a dishwasher. The air-dry function works just as well.

6.) Air conditioners should be checked each year and fitted with new filters. A thermostatic control that can be programmed to control the temperature inside save electricity and so does switching off air conditioning units when everyone is out.

7.) Where possible wash laundry in cold water and this will save approximately eight five percent of the electricity used in washing.

8.) Using electric appliances for washing dishes and laundry after seven in the evening, when the cost of electricity is lower in many places, further reduces bills.

9.) Switching to the fast cycle to spin clothes in the washing machine takes out more water, so you do not need to use your clothes dryer for so long.

10.) Changing over to fluorescent lights can say 33% of the electricity you currently use on lighting with standard bulbs.

It is important to bear in mind that electrical equipment in the house uses around twenty percent of your total electricity for the year. There are refrigerators on the market that could save you up to seventy dollars per year, just by being more efficient. Over the life time of the appliance, this could add up to more than a thousand dollars in savings.

Make sure that those around are aware of these ways of reducing fuel costs and make the savings part of your life.

What You Can Expect From an Angiogram

Posted by faithhkhblog | Health | Tuesday 13 October 2009 2:59 am

I have been informed that I will need to have an Angiogram. I have been told that this procedure is a safe and pretty much, painless ordeal and I have no reason to worry. However, the truth is that ther is a lot of things to worry about. They won’t want to put a camera isnide your body and into your heart for no reason at all. An Angiogram is an OPD (Out-Patient Department) procedure and the Cardiologist will open up an artery in the leg and slowly move a camera which goes into the arteries in the heart muscles. It sounds worse than it actually is, but the advantage is that you the stats of your arteries and heart at any point in time. This will finally give an answer to how detrimental of a situation I am in, that is, if I have one. The Cardiologist must be somewhat concerned since he scheduled this procedure for four days from now.

Once the day approaches, I check in at the Cardiology Center at my local hospital and get prepped to go through the Angiogram. An I.V. was put into me and I was already. Once I was put into the Angiogram Theater, a sedative that leaves me awake was given to me but they said I will feel no pain at all. I was not able to hear what was going on either. When the nurses spoke directly to me in loud voices I was able to respond though.

The benefit of the Angiogram is if there is a blockage found, the Cardiologist can normally put a metal stent of pipe in the artery to maintain my blood flow. This is a much easier procedure than if I would have had to go through Open Heart Surgery. This is what I would have had to do a few years ago. About an hour after the Angiogram began, the doctor must have lowered the amount of the sedative as I remember him telling me the status of my condition.

The not so good news is that I did have arterial calcium deposits. This was what they had noticed with the other laboratory tests that I took. The good news is that my arteries are totally smooth on the inside and are considered to be quite large. Big arteries with a small, smooth coating of calcium only made it a potential problem.

Since I am a larger person from a family of larger people for quite a few generations, the reality that my arteries are large didn’t surprise me any. I am not able to show proof about it but I have toconsider that the vitamins and supplements I have been taking for over 10 years has helped to protect me from developing a full on heart disease. The Cardiologist continues to be concerned for long-term survival since it shows a high calcium score from the blood tests.

Now I must make some life-style changes. I’ve gone from a pretty lazy type of person to one who rides an exercise bike every day for about seven miles. I continue to do this even though now the doctor has told me to take an adult aspirin each day and to change my eating style too. It’s a process I must go through and there are good days and then there are not so good days. I have become very conscious about what I eat. My LDL cholesterol is at 90 now; the Cardiologist has put me on Statins to reduce the bad cholesterol even more. There is no proof, but I seem to believe that the Statins will soon be a crucial part of living my life.

Well that is my story. Physical activity and one aspirin a day helps thin my blood, Statins to help reduce my bad cholesterol and vitamins to be taken daily just because I think they have helped me in the past. With luck on my side, I will be able to live a long life without the need to deal with the horrible effects of a serious heart disease.
